We've been using corn gluten meal to gradually change the pH of our lawn. It acts as a natural weed suppressant without harming the lawn. (Plus I like to think it gives farmers an alternative use than turning their product into tons of corn syrup)

Yes! Boiling or hot water works to kill weeds - I found this out by accident when I watered my mint with a hose that was left out in the sun. Thankfully mint is so persistent, it eventually recovered :)
