So, I got this cheapy straw hat for $5 at the Portland Antique Fair last summer simply out of necessity-
It's cute enough for wandering around a fair held in a hot asphalt parking lot and working in the garden, but not quite cute enough for I dunno, happy hour drinks out with friends on a warm afternoon? I thought it needed some personality and I had all these grand plans of embroidering a design around the bill (too hard to get the needle thru!) or circling it in rainbow pompoms....
And then I found this vintage trim at an estate sale a couple weekends ago:
And a few minutes later....
I have a new cute hat with some personality! Easy peasy and less than $10!
I stuck a little turtle pin (from a different estate sale!) on too cause it's kitschy cute and also will help keep the trim attached and in place. For a permanent fix, you can tie the bow how you like, get it situated and stick a few drops of fabric glue beneath the trim to attach it to the hat.
Now I'm garden ready, happy-hour ready, summer ready. Whattya think? Gonna try it?
Ohhh, I love that ribbon Jena! This is such a smart trick too :)

So cute! And I love the turtle pin. I have a very plain sun hat that I picked up in Croatia - now I know how I'm going to spiff it up!
