This is a great project! I have grand plans for my backyard this summer and I think a bird bath would be a lovely addition. I probably wouldn't glue my basin in place either so we could empty the sill water regularly (to avoid west nile virus issues).

How fantastic - I'm a bird-a-phile, too, and I've been looking for creative ways to repurpose items to make birdbaths, feeders and houses. We moved from a subdivision with young trees to a street with very old, mature trees. So the bluejays, cardinals, swallows and finches are in abundance.

Wondering - would you happen to have any suggestions on how to repurpose an old metal weathervane/windmill into something 'bird-friendly'? Here is a link to a picture of it: http://mamaonajourney.typepad.com/restoring-our-victorian-h/2011/03/restoring-an-old-metal-weathervane.html
Thanks much, and I truly enjoy your blog. :-)
