When fellow blogger Sharla from Rare Bird Finds emailed me about her jewelry collection, I fell instantly in love with her oh so cute and oh so affordable wood filigree earrings!

Blast from the past: ZN Creative Arts

ZN Creative Arts was one of the very first sites I wrote about a couple years ago when I first started this blog...ah, memories.  Grace, the creator of the gorgeous custom enamel jewelry found there, wrote me about her recent revamp of the site and she has added a lot of new items since I last saw it, so I think it's high time we re-visit, hmmm?
Znjewelry
They're vibrant and colorful, modern and nature inspired... plus, all of these beautiful enamel works come in a load of color options so you can pick out which one is just right for you- a custom creation!  I'm glad to see you're still in the thick of creating things, Grace!  Check out all she has to offer on the re-designed ZN Creative Arts!

I think I'll have to do more "blasts from the past" and see what some of my first post subjects are up to these days, hmm?

Eco-Friendly Find: Jesse Danger

Pure silver jewelry does not necessarily bring the most earth conscious images to mind- you may think of the giant open-pit mines and their toxic drainage or the exploitation of the mine workers.  But Jesse Danger creates silver jewelry that is earth friendly too.  How can that be?  He creates his goods out of 100% recycled Argentium silver.  No raw materials wasted there.  He also donates 5% of his profits to Earthworks, a nonprofit group that regulates fair trade mining worldwide and is working on mining reform.  He even packages his orders up in a box using 100% recycled and sustainable materials.  Not too shabby.  Oh, and did I mention, his jewelry designs are absolutely lovely?

Oh, the lightening... a mini story

Last night, we were thrown from our sleeps, awakened by what had to be the loudest clap of thunder I have ever heard.  It sounded as if the whole Earth's hands were clapping, right outside our window!  As if a thousand bowlers hit a strike, all at once, in our apartment building!  Still dreamy, yet wide eyed, at 2:45 am, we tried to figure out what horrific noise just scared us from our sleep...when the storm came.  The sky burst forth with light much too bright for tired eyes as bolts of lightning fled across it at an alarming pace.  Bang, BANG! went the thunder right behind, applauding its incredible display.  It was different than the long rolling thunder of my youth, growing up in a desert town.  It was loud and harsh, frightening and invigorating.  I could feel the hair stand up on my arms.  My heart beat faster.  I sat and watched with a childlike excitement and naiveté.  "I wonder if we'll get struck," I murmured, feeling the closeness of the electricity in the air.  My boyfriend shushed me and proceeded to knock on our wood headboard.  Oh yeah, that'll protect us from nature's fury.  Suddenly, a rain came.  An incredibly loud, beating rain, as if to say "take that!" to the lightning.  The war between light and water ensued, deafening and surrounding- it sounded as if rain was pouring through our windows.  There was too much adrenaline and curiosity in my veins to fall asleep again, so I watched.  I watched, and listened to one of nature's most amazing displays.  It made me feel alive, part of something greater, just a tiny spec upon a tiny earth in this great big universe.  That bang literally and figuratively woke me up.  And now it's 4 am and I'm here typing this entry as the energy outside me is calming down- the thunder sounds few and far away now, the rain is just a trickle.  It's back to bed for me...will celebrate my incredible lightening experience with some items in the morning (now only a couple hours away) and lots of coffee!

**Alright, it's now 3 hours later and I'm awake again and not quite as chipper, so while I let the coffee sink in, you take a look at some electric, lightning inspired goods from Etsy!

Extending the olive branch...

I'm pleased to announce that yet another great place to find handmade and unique goods has stepped onto the scene, 29olives!  The site is suuuuper duper cute (of course it is, since it was designed by my favorite web designer, Aeolidia!) and houses loads of equally cute goods, from adorable tote bags and housewares, to precious jewelry and paper goods.  29olives
It's a great collection that I'm sure will only grow with time, which is kind of a scary thought, because I already want to buy olive it!  (hey, it's not easy being punny before coffee :)  Much luck to you and your new shop, Erin!

Zen and the art of jewelry making

As I sit here cross legged on my computer chair, staring at the beautiful designs from Ensō Jewelry, I find myself feeling calm.  Present.  Aware of the intricacies in each piece of jewelry, the amount of work that each one took to create- from simple beads that hang gently off their hooks, to intricately woven pieces that can best be described as works of art.  Each creation is like a mediation on shape and form, like an Ensō in Japanese Zen culture, which the jewelry line was inspired by.

Give yourself a moment to relax this morning- take a breath, take a break and have fun exploring Ensō Jewelry, filled with little wonders just like these.

Eco-Friendly Find: 2ReVert

I guess it's due to stress and sickness that I've fallen out of my routine of bringing you an eco-friendly find each week, but I'm back on the ball now with a wonderful shop to share: 2ReVert!  Their contemporary, street wear jewelry designs are made from 100% post consumer recycled skateboards!  Yep, I said skateboards
2revert
They take old, used, broken and un-loved skateboards, cut and sand them into interesting shapes, seal them up with non-toxic glaze and voila!  Necklaces, earrings, rings, bracelets and cuff links created from recycled boards.  Dope, dude.

Lo-lo-lo-lo-lo-la

In 1970, The Kinks fell in love with Lola, and today, it's your turn.  The Lola Collection is a beautiful and original series of jewelry pieces, each one-of-a-kind!  Like little pieces of art, they start off as bits of vintage ephemera and tiny collages, and then are encased in a hand formed, polymer bezel, and etched on the back with words of wisdom or hand-painted designs.  What does all that technical garbledeegook boil down to?  Pure pretty:
Lola
And just like the Kink's Lola, these pieces come with a hidden surprise!  They are all reversible- on the back side are words written in English, French or German that you can wear outwardly for a simpler style statement.  So what are you waiting for?  Lola's looking good and is ready to dance!  Take a better look at her here.

Into the secret garden

I had another great introduction email hit my inbox last week from Aimee, the lady behind these simple yet romantic (and super affordable!) necklaces and earrings made from unfinished wood pieces that are hand-painted and hand-stamped with feminine designs:
Gardenadorn
These lovely pieces are created under the Garden Adornments label and have a great antique feel, playing up the botanical imagery that you'd see in European textiles and home accessories (like the vase they're hanging from! A perfect match!)  Find more unique wood jewelry, along with other botanical inspired gems, at Garden Adornments!

Struttin' down the street with my Cassi-o

I've forgotten now where I first saw these ever so lovely bracelets by Emma Cassi- but whoever you were who introduced me to them, thank you!  I am in love!  They are artful little wares that feature a mix of contemporary and vintage beads embroidered onto tulle and lace.
Emmacassi

They're so delicate and feminine, and truly unique, I've never seen anything quite like them before!  I want that green one at the top to be mine, all mine, but alas, it's just not in the budget of a girl who's currently trying to save up enough quarters to be able to do her laundry...damn!

Eco-Friendly Find: Fanisong Jewelry

I was thrilled to find this email awaiting me one morning last week, introducing me to Fanisong Jewelry's new eco-friendly line- my eco-find day couldn't come soon enough!  The jewelry is just gorgeous and features original nature photographs under glass- but what's so eco conscious about that?  All the pendants are made from 100% recycled glass!  Pretty cool, huh?
Fanisong
You can find the whole recycled glass series right here- there's lots of inspiring, colorful images to choose from and you can also pick your own ribbon color for added personalization.  Thanks, Fanisong, for your nature inspired and nature friendly necklaces!

Put it on ice

I love these pendants by Soma Venus, a new line that features her original art collages, tiny and compact, housed behind a thick, icy piece of glass:
Somavenus
They're unique and fun in vibrant colors and sure to start a conversation.  Each pendant is only $18, so you can collect a few for your every whim!  And right now, if you buy 3 you get the 4th one free!  That's a pretty good deal for some wearable art.  While you're there, be sure to also check out the Soma Venus polaroid ice pendants and all the other fun stuff in the shop!

Acrylic wonders

Just discovered on the etsy front page, the beautiful jewelry by Lauren K Roberts!
Laurenk
It's amazing to me how you can make something like plastic appear to be so feminine, frilly and sweet.  All these Lauren K Roberts designs are just that, made from laser cut acrylic, inspired by 1950's design elements.  They come in either black or white and since they're plastic, I'm sure they're pretty durable and can withstand any bar-hopping-earring-dropping nights in your future (not like that's ever happened to you though, right?)

New goodies in the shoppe!

I haven't posted about new items from the modish shoppe in a loooong time, and since it's well overdue and I happen to have lots of wonderful new items in for spring, I thought it high time to show some off!

First off, I'd like to introduce a new artist to the shoppe, Stephanie DosReis!  I feel honored to carry her wonderful mixed media prints and (my favorite) her adooooorable plush houses made from vintage fabrics, they're each one of kind!
Stephd
There's also beautiful new jewelry and a pretty new color of poppy pins and hairpins for the summer, by foundling:

Aye, Mamacita!

I was going to include this spicy cha cha cha painting (you see it there below- it's the one that makes you feel like dancing!) in the cinco de mayo post yesterday, but decided to stick with Mexican artists on that one...but when searching for today's post, I could hear the lovely lady still calling my name- "Hola jena, remember me senorita? Will I get the chance to dance on your blog? Baila! Cha cha cha!"  And how could I refuse her?  Especially when she brought some lovely friends along...
Karin
You can find these beautiful paintings in Karin Grown's shop- they are giclee prints stretched on canvas with hand-painted touches to bring out the highlights in each piece.  She also makes pretty little jewelry adornments featuring vintage stamps and papers soldered under glass.  Cha cha yourself on over and check everything out!

De Colores

Feliz Cinco de Mayo!  Today has become a day to celebrate Mexican culture in the United States- although I'm sure you'll see many examples of the capitalization that has made Cinco de Mayo so popular here ($1 margarita happy hour anyone?), I hope you'll also find celebrations of the Mexican heritage, art, music and culture that have helped make America what it is today.  To help celebrate some of that talent, here are some handmade goods by Mexico based artists and crafters that I found on good ol' etsy!
